Flyby Survival

How long does a structure bound to a cluster-core IMBH survive the stellar traffic? Impulsive Monte Carlo of encounter-driven eccentricity diffusion, with gravitational focusing and a two-component mass function. Paper E, Fig. 1 / Appendix A.

Conservative by construction. Kicks use the impulsive approximation with saturation for penetrating passages; adiabatic invariance (encounter duration ≫ orbital period, the deep-envelope norm) suppresses the real hazard exponentially below this estimate. Single-passage disruption is impossible at stellar-to-IMBH mass ratios (Δv/v ≲ 10⁻²). Defaults: σ from measurements.js clusterParams (18.2 km/s, cluster-averaged; Paper E adopts the 21 km/s central-region midpoint of Baumgardt & Vasiliev 2021 and Nitschai et al. 2023, which lengthens survival times by tens of per cent); densities from the ω Cen core. Method: Paper E Appendix A (seeded reference run: fig1_envelope.py, output fig1_results.json — full source bundle at /papers/source/).
